　わたしの今住んでいるところは、川原につづいた貸家で庭には樹も草もない。
I’m living in a rent house near the riverside. There is neither tree nor grass in the yard.

眩しい日かげに打たれた砂利ばかりである。
There is only gravel paved in the shade of glaring sunlight.

だから滅多に庭へは出ない。
That’s why I rarely go out into the yard.

ただよくとかげが這うている。
But lizards frequently crawl there.

飴色の肌をしているのと、虹のような色をしているのとが、まぶしい日光の中を這い出しながら、低い蚊や蠅の飛ぶのを見ている。
A lizard with amber-colored skin and another with rainbow colors crawl out in the bright sunlight and watch mosquitoes and flies flying low.

――暑い日には少しばかりの雑草のかげから、三角形の口を少し上向きにして、凝然として何かを狙っている。
On a hot day, a lizard remains still in the shade of a small patch of weeds, keeping its triangle mouths slightly upward, like it is watching a prey.

が、別に蚊も蠅も飛んでいるわけではない。
However, it isn’t necessarily because there are mosquitoes and flies flying around.
