わたしは竹切れをさがした。
I looked for a bamboo stick.

その尖端をナイフで掠め、ナイフと同じいくらいの鋭い刃拵えをした。
I whittled its tip with a knife to make it as pointed as the knife.

指頭にさわると西洋剃刀くらいの刃あたりが麗朗として感じられた。
Putting it on a fingertip, the touch of it felt as fine as a western razor.

――わたしはこれでいいと呟いた。
I said to myself ”this will do”.

これなればあいつの尾くらい切れるだろうと思った。
I thought that this stick could at least cut off the tail.

早くおやり、誰かがそう言う。
Someone said, “do it now”.

振りかえると庭のすみの方に下婢が黙って張物している。
As I turned back, a servant girl was starching clothes silently in a corner of the yard.

うしろ向きになって絹裏を板の上で湿らせ、指さきで練っている。
In a position with her back to me, she was softening a soaked silk lining on a board with her fingers.

日かげで下婢の顔が赤く恐ろしくなって見える。……
In the shade, her face looked reddish and frightening.

「何時か？――」
　わたしは下婢にそう声をかけた。
“What time?”, I said to her.

寂寞がわたしをそう呼ばしたのではなく、ただ、何気なく、言わば心にもないことを尋ねたのである。
It wasn’t loneliness that made me address her. I just casually asked her something that I actually didn’t care at all.
