英語日記 今年のカブトムシとクワガタ

We have some beetles as pets at my house.
僕らは家で何匹かカブトムシを飼っている。

It’s common to catch some types of bugs and to keep them for pets among Japanese children.

日本の子供の間では、いくつかの種類の虫をとってペットにするのはよくある。

Beetles are probably the most popular bug.

カブトムシはおそらく一番人気。

My sons are no exception.

僕の息子たちも例外ではない。

My youngest son and I will go catch beetles every summer.

僕と下の子は毎年夏にカブトムシを採りにいく。

In my neighborhood, beetles are rare and it’s difficult to catch them.

僕の近所では、カブトムシは珍しく捕るのは難しい。

Broadly speaking, there are two types of beetles; rhinoceros beetles or usual beetles and stag beetles.

大まかに言って、カブトムシには2種類いる。つまり、カブトムシとクワガタだ。

As for usual beetles, mostly there is only one type living in Japan.

普通のカブトムシについては、日本では大体1種類しかいない。

As for stag beetles, there are several different types of them.

クワガタについてが、何種類か違う種類がいる。

Since they are popular and kind of rare in urban areas, they are traded too.

カブトムシは人気があって、市街地にはなかなかいないので、売買もされている。

They are often sold at some special pet shops and so called home centers.

カブトムシはよく専門のペットショップやいわゆるホームセンターで売られている。

The price varies depending on the rareness and popularity.

値段は珍しさや人気の度合いで変わる。

Some popular types will be priced over 10,000 yen.

人気のある種類では10,000円を超えることもある。

This summer, my youngest son bought a pair of stag beetles.

この夏、うちの下の息子はクワガタの雄雌ペアを買った:

Additionally, we caught a female stag beetle and a male beetle in the wild.

加えて、野生の雌のクワガタ1匹と雄のカブトムシ1匹を捕った。

The pair mated and laid some eggs.

ペアのクワガタは交尾して卵を産んだ。

One of them successfully hatched.

一つの卵が無事孵化した。

The larva has been growing steadily.

幼虫はすくすく成長している。

Actually, it’s the first time that all the bugs have survived this long when we keep beetles.

実は、飼ってる全てのカブトムシたちがこれほど長く生き延びたのは初めてのことだ。

Usually, they will die quite soon after catching, due to our lack of proper care, their stress of being kept in a cage or just their bad luck.

いつもなら、捕った後しばらくして死んでしまう。適切な世話が足りないか、カゴに入れられているストレスか、単純に虫たちが運が悪いのか。

The pair that my son bought have survived over three months now.

息子が買ったペアは今のところ3か月以上生きている。

At first, I had no clue why, but the biggest difference this time from the past is the type of food we give them.

最初は、なぜか全然わからなかったけど、今回過去と一番違う点は、虫たちに与えるエサだ。

In the past, my son and I didn’t pay attention to the quality of food, which is usually a type of jelly, and just bought the cheapest ones we found at random shops.

過去には、息子と僕はエサ、昆虫ゼリー、の品質には気にかけず、適当な店で見つけた一番安いものを買っていた。

This time, however, we happened to buy the jelly that contained proteins.

今回は、タンパク質入りのゼリーをたまたま買った。

It’s noticeable that they eat much more eagerly and more lively.

明らかに、虫たちは勢いよくエサを食べてるし元気がよい。

I think that’s a good example that the quality of food is important for every creature.

このことは、全ての生き物にとって食べるものの品質が重要だということの良い例だと思う。
