時々、重い荷馬車がゴロゴロと道路や、家々を震動させて私を追い越した。

Heavy horse-drawn wagons sometimes passed me, rumbling and shaking the road and houses.

　ふと私は、行手に当って何かが起っているのを知った。十四五人の大人や子供が、道ばたに不規則な半円を描いて立止っていた。
I suddenly knew that something had happened ahead on the street. Dozens of adults and children were standing by the roadside, forming a irregular semicircle.

　それらの人々の顔には、皆一種の笑いが浮んでいた。
Some kinds of laughs were seen on all the faces of those people.

喜劇を見ている人の笑いが浮んでいた。
It was the type of laugh that someone has when watching comedy.

ある者は大口を開いてゲラゲラ笑っていた。
Some people were guffawing with their mouths wide open.

　好奇心が、私をそこへ近付かせた。
Curiosity dragged me there.

　近付くに従って、大勢の笑顔と際立った対照を示している一つの真面目くさった顔を発見した。
As I approached, I saw a serious face in clear contrast to a lot of other laughing ones.

その青ざめた顔は、口をとがらせて、何事か熱心に弁じ立てていた。
The pale face was speaking feverishly with a pout.

香具師の口上にしては余りに熱心過ぎた。
It seemed too feverish for the speech of a saltimbanco.

宗教家の辻説法にしては見物の態度が不謹慎だった。
Onlookers’ behaviors seemed unscrupulous for listening to a street preaching of someone of religion.

I wondered what was going on there.

Joining the crowd in the semicircle without noticing, I was one of the onlookers.

　演説者は、青っぽいくすんだ色のセルに、黄色の角帯をキチンと締めた、風采のよい、見た所相当教養もありそうな四十男であった。
The preacher was a man in his 40s who appeared quite well educated, in a serge kimono of faded bluish color, with a yellow stiff obi put on neatly.
