Daydream

It would be a bad dream in broad daylight or a real event.

It was a steaming hot afternoon when you could overly feel a lukewarm, late-spring breeze on your burning cheeks.

I was walking on the broad, dusty main street that went straight without a visible end on the outskirts of a town. My memories of back then are blurry and I can’t remember whether I had some agenda or passed by on the way of a stroll.

Discolored store buildings like a washed-out unlined kimono stood side by side quietly.

In the shopwindows of three “jaku” long (approx. 0.9 m) of different stores, there were a variety of goods : in one place, some kid’s athletic shirts dyed with certain geographic patterns were hanging; in another, there were aligned all over the place, some assortments of sand-like seeds of different colors such as red, yellow, white and brown packaged in a thin box partitioned in a grid pattern inside; the narrow, dimly lit inside of another store was filled with bike frames and tires from floor to ceiling. Among those dreary buildings, a two-story house was stuck in the middle : behind a thin lattice door, there were faded lanterns hanging ; the house appeared as if it was saying “I don’t want to be pressed from both sides so much”, and from there, unsophisticated twanging sound of shamisen (a type of Japanese stringed instrument) was wafting.

“Appk, chikiriki, appa pa....appa pa pa....” some girls with their pigtails covered in dust were singing in a circle in the middle of the road.

“Appa pa paa...” a teary melody was wafting slowly into the hazy spring sky.

Boys were jumping rope.

The chord of a long rope was slapping the ground and going up in the air persistently. A child with a handwoven kimono undone in the front was jumping nimbly.

The scene looked really leisurely like a movie shot with a high speed camera.

Heavy horse-drawn wagons sometimes passed me, rumbling and shaking the road and houses.

I suddenly knew that something had happened ahead on the street. Dozens of adults and children were standing by the roadside, forming a irregular semicircle.

Some kinds of laughs were seen on all the faces of those people.

It was the type of laugh that someone has when watching comedy.

Some people were guffawing with their mouths wide open.

Curiosity dragged me there.

As I approached, I saw a serious face in clear contrast to a lot of other laughing ones.

The pale face was speaking feverishly with a pout.

It seemed too feverish for the speech of a saltimbanco.

Onlookers’ behaviors seemed unscrupulous for listening to a street preaching of someone of religion.

I wondered what was going on there.

Joining the crowd in the semicircle without noticing, I was one of the onlookers.

The speaker was a man in his 40s who appeared quite well educated, in a serge kimono of faded bluish color, with a yellow stiff obi put on neatly.

Under the shiny, wig-like hair, there was a pale, oval, convex face, slanted eyes, and red lips that contrasted with an exuberant mustache. The lips were moving vigorously while spitting ill-manneredly. The lips were flapping and spitting rudely.

The well defined nose was sweating, and bare feet covered by sand and dust were sticking out from beneath the hem of the kimono.

“...how much did I love my wife?” His speech seemed to be reaching its climax.

The man, filled with deep emotion, looked each onlooker dead in the eye, one by one, and he eventually went on to speak as if to answer his own question.

"I loved her so much I had to kill her!"
“....alas, that woman was a cheater”
The onlookers bursted into laughter and were about to miss his next words “she could have made out with someone else any time”.

“No, maybe she did!” Even stronger laughter broke out.

“I was so worried about it” saying so, he shook his head like a kabuki actor, “I couldn’t focus on business. I begged my wife every night in bed. I begged her with my palms together!” More laughter. “Please swear, please swear that you won’t change your heart and leave me. But that woman never once listened. Like a whore, she'd just use her coquetry and charm to evade me.
But, ah, how strongly her coquetry captured me.”

“Hey, thanks for the story,” someone yelled, followed by another wave of laughter.

“Everyone”, the man went on to say, ignoring the interruptions.

“What would you do if you were in my place? Could you refrain from killing her?”, “....that woman looked great with her Mimikakushi hairstyle. She would do her hair by herself very well....she used to sit in front of a dressing table. That’s where she did her hair. Her beautifully made up face turned toward me and showed a bright smile with red lips”.
And then, the man struck a pose by moving a shoulder upward.

The thick eyebrows approached from both sides and he put on an unusual expression.

The red lips got twisted creepily.

“... That was the moment to do it, I thought. That was the moment, my chance to keep her beautiful figure for myself forever.”
“I hammered an awl into her fragrant nape with all my strength. Before the smile on her face could fade away, with canine teeth peeking from between her lips....... she died.”
A lively advertisement band passed by, its trumpet blaring out of tune.

A line of children followed after it, singing in tune: “This is Manchuria, hundreds of miles away from my hometown."

“Gentlemen, that band is spreading around the news about me, saying that I, Taro Magara, am a murderer, a murderer. That's what they're spreading around.”
Again, laughter broke out.

The band's drum kept beating and beating, as though it was an accompaniment for his speech.

“I mutilated her cadaver, chopping it into five parts. You see, a torso, two arms, and two legs--that makes five in total. It was such a loss, but I had no other choice... ah, her fair, voluptuous legs...”

“You guys didn’t hear that sound of water, did you?” He abruptly lowered his voice.

He leaned in and looked around, as if he was about to confess a very important thing. “I kept my tap running for 3721 days. You know what I did? I stuffed all five parts of her corpse in a barrel and used that water to cool them. And here's the thing, everyone”, he lowered his voice to an almost indiscenable volume.

“I know a secret method. It's a trick to keep a cadaver from rotting. It’s called 'grave wax.'” Grave wax... the section of a medical book I knew that explained “grave wax” came to mind, along with a very musty portrait of its author.

What on earth does this man want to say?

Fear like I'd never known before seized at my heart.

“My wife’s greasy, white torso and limbs became pretty waxworks”

“Hah, that's such a cliche. How many times have you repeated it since yesterday?”, someone yelled rudely.

“Hey, all of you.” The man's voice suddenly became louder.

“You still don’t get it, do you? I bet you guys just think that my wife ran off, don't you? Here’s the deal. I murdered that woman. Hey, were you blown away?”.... He began cackling--and then his laughter cut off in an instant, the original seriousness returning to his face.

The man began telling groaningly.

“With that, the woman completely became mine. There is no need to worry. I can kiss her whenever I want. I can hold her whenever too. I’m satisfied now.”

“However, I can’t let my guard down. I am a murderer. There is always the possibility that police officers detect me. Here comes my trick about where her body is hidden. Whether it is an officer or an detective, anyone won’t find it. Look, the cadaver in fact is installed at the storefront.”

His eyes looked at me.

I turned around with a start.

Until that very moment, I hadn’t realized that, right before my face, there were a sunshade of white canvas....”drug”....”on demand medicine”....the familiar font lettre de somme, and at the back of that, a human anatomical model in a glass box. The man was the owner of a drug store named as something something drug.

“There she is. Please take a closer look at my babe”
I wonder what made me do it, but I went inside the sunshade before I realized it.

In front of me, the woman’s face was inside the glass box.

She was grinning, showing her canine teeth.

Under the ominous swelling of waxwork, the real human skin looked darkened.

To prove that it was not crafted, it was covered by fuzz all over.

I felt like my heart was going to leap into my mouth. I barely braced my collapsing body and edged away from the shade.

And I went away from the crowd while being careful not to be found by the man.

When I turned back, a police officer stood behind the crowd.

He was also listening to the man’s speech with a grin like the others.

I was about to pat the insensitive officer on the shoulder and say, “What are you laughing at? Isn’t it your duty to do something about it? Don’t you understand what the man was saying? If you think it’s all a lie, get inside that shade and look at what there is. You’ll see a human cadaver exposed in the middle of Tokyo”

However, I didn’t have the guts to do so.

I began walking, staggering with dizziness.

A wide road continued without end.

Under the effects of heat haze, a row of poles along the road was shimmering like seaweed.
