I’ve come back home from my parents’ house a while ago.

しばらく前に両親の家から帰ってきた。

Shortly before I left, unexpected visitors dropped in.

向こうを出る少し前に、思いがけない来客があった。

They were my father’s sister and her son.

父の妹とその息子だった。

As far as I remember, the last time I saw my aunt was over several decades ago.

覚えている限りで、最後に叔母を見たのは数十年前だ。

She severed all the ties with her family, including my father, due to the financial issues that my grandfather had caused.

叔母は、祖父が起こしたお金の問題のせいで、僕の父を含めて家族と絶縁した。

Consequently, the family was ruined and separated due to the family money and its loss. 

結果として、家の財産とその喪失によって家族は崩壊し離散した。

What remained afterwards was only a huge debt my grandfather made.

後に残ったのは祖父が作った多額の借金だけだった。

For the last couple of decades, my father and some relatives restored relationships, but we didn’t know of the whereabouts of my aunt.

この数十年間、父と親戚たちは関係を修復してきたが、叔母の所在については知らなかった。

So, her visit must have been a great surprise to my father today.

それなので、父にとって彼女の来訪は大きな驚きだったに違いない。

I don’t remember how I got along with her son when I was a child because when I saw him last was over 30 years ago.

子供の頃、彼女の息子と自分がどんな感じだったか覚えていない。何しろ最後に彼と会ったのは30年以上前のことなので。

I heard a rumor that he went to study in China a long time ago.

かなり前に彼が中国へ留学したという噂は聞いた。

Anyways, it felt surreal that they both appeared in front of me.

とにかく、2人が自分の目の前に現れたのは現実に思えなかった。

When I was about to go and said goodbye to my parents, they were still having conversation with my aunt and her son.

帰宅しようと両親に別れを告げた時、彼らはまだ叔母と息子と話し込んでいた。

My father even looked to be in shock all the while.

父は終始驚きで呆然としているように見えた。

It is not hard to imagine that they would have a lot to share after the very long communication gap over decades.

何十年にわたる長い音信不通の後に話しが尽きないのは想像に難くない。

Hopefully, the reunion will turn to be a positive one.

再会が前向きなものになってほしい。
