empollonの英語とか学習帳

このブログは僕の英語学習の内容や進捗、特に翻訳練習を記録するために始めました。ついでに、面白い人たちとの新たな出会いがあったら、なお嬉しいです。This will be to keep a record of my English practice progress. If I can get to know new interesting people through any interactions here, that’s also nice

英語日記 父、退職

Today I heard from my wife that my father had suddenly resigned from his taxi driving job several days ago. My mother told my wife so when she dropped at my house. The news took me by surprise although I had been encouraging him to do so because of his age, 78. I had started saying he might as well already retire a couple of years ago, but he didn’t take it seriously.

According to my wife, the reason why he decided was a minor accident he had on duty. When he went to pick up a customer at a kindergarten and tried to park the car, the car hit a hedge. It was just a fender bender, so luckily there was no one injured. However, it would seem to be a sign for him. He seemed disappointed with himself after the accident. He said to my mother something like “making such an accident would be too unprofessional”. Next day, he turned in his resignation.

I think it was the right decision. I’m relieved that he hadn’t had any severe accidents in driving. As for their income, I don’t worry too much since they seem to have some savings and receive national pensions. What makes me worry is that he might get too bored without a job after having worked long hours regularly over almost 40 years: he had started working as a taxi driver when he was 40 and the only thing he seemed motivated by was his job. I think he was desperate to support his family. He still looks young for his age. He has rather become a cheerful person as he aged. I wonder if not having a job might have some influence on his morale, making him too slack or something. I hope he can find his another passion in life.
