英語日記 ロシアのウクライナ侵攻
I have a language partner who is Ukrainian.
ウクライナのランゲージパートナーが1人いる。
She and I have been practicing English over years by having conversations in English once a week.
何年間か彼女と週1で英会話をしてきた。
When I heard about the Russian invasion to Ukraine, it was her that immediately came to mind.
ロシアのウクライナ侵攻について聞いた時、彼女のことがすぐに頭に浮かんだ。
Then I sent messages to her, but I didn’t get replies.
彼女にメッセージしたけど返事はなかった。
I started worrying when I saw the news that the city she was living in was bombarded.
彼女が住んでる街が爆撃されたニュースを見ていよいよ心配になった。
But fortunately, after a couple of days of silence, she texted me back saying she was okay.
でも幸い、数日の沈黙の後、彼女から返事が来て、大丈夫ということだった。
Before air strike, she flew to her parents house in Moldova.
A few days later, I was surprised that she contacted me for our regular English call.
その数日後、びっくりなことに彼女からいつもの英語の電話のための連絡があった。
For some reason, I thought it’d be inappropriate for me to contact her to practice English under the current circumstances or she’d probably not be motivated to talk.
なぜだか、今の状況で英語練習にために自分が彼女に連絡するのは不適切な気がして、また彼女はおそらく話す気が起こらないだろうとも思った。
But surprisingly she contacted me and we talked like a usual time.
でも、びっくりなことに彼女から連絡が来て、僕らはいつもどおり話した。
And while in conversation, I heard something more surprising.
そして、会話の中でもっと驚くことを聞いた。
She used to work for an IT company in Ukraine.
彼女はウクライナにあるIT企業で働いていた。
After the pandemic started, they fully shifted to remotework and she has been working from home for the last two years.
パンデミックが始まった後は、彼らは完全にリモートワークに移行して、彼女はこの2年間、家から働いていた。
What surprised me was even now the employees for that company including her keep working respectively from where they are if situations allow.
驚いたのは、彼女含めてその会社の従業員たちは、状況が許せば今も彼らが今いる場所からそれぞれ働き続けていることだ。
She said she was working from her parents’ house.
彼女は両親の家から働いていると言った。
Some people are working in Ukraine, some in Russia : there are both Ukrainians and Russians among employees and the management.
ある人たちはウクライナで働いていて、ある人たちはロシアで働いている。つまり、従業員と管理部門の中にはウクライナ人とロシア人の両方がいる。
The workers of both nationalities are coming together to keep afloat the company that is struggling due to the war and the sanctions inflicted on Russia.
両国籍の人たちが、戦争とロシアへの経済制裁で苦労している会社を存続させるために協力して働いている。
It might be natural that people from all walks of life work together in this global era and the same happens even between people of the countries fighting a war one against the other.
今のグローバル時代には色々な背景の人たちが一緒に働くこと、そして互いに戦争している国の人たちの間でも同じようになるというのは自然のことかもしれない。
I feel like the world now is so closely connected and mixed in many aspects in people's life.
世界は今では、人々の生活の様々な面でそれほど密接につながって混ざり合っているように思う。
It might be such a bond of people that we should embrace and cherish in a dark time like this.
今のような苦しい時には、我々はそんな人々の絆を大切に守らなければならないかもしれない。
