アフターダークを和訳

A young, good looking lady walks into a department store crowded with shoppers one day at the end of the year.

年の暮れのある日、若く容姿端麗な婦人がひとり、買い物客で混み合ったデパートに歩いて来る。

She looks to be in her mid-20s.

20代半ば位だろうか。

The simple combination of her white shirt and tight black skirt, both pleated neatly, which is a typical office lady look, contrasts her fine features.

共にきっちりと折り目のついた白いシャツとぴっちりした黒いスカートの組み合わせは典型的な事務職の女性の服装だが、彼女の繊細な顔立ちを際立たせている。

She's looking around on the ground floor.

彼女は1階のフロアを見て回っている。

She has come to buy a golden thimble that she found in an ad of the store previously, and thinks that should be an ideal gift for her mother.

前に店の広告で見た金の指ぬきが母親に理想的な贈り物だと思い買いに来たのだった。

After going around on the floor, she asks a clerk, who appears terribly busy attending to other customers, which floor she should go to for it, but he looks as if he doesn't hear her.

1階のフロアをまわった後、客たちの相手に恐ろしく忙しそうな店員に、指ぬきを買うにはどのフロアに行かなければならないか聞いた。しかし、店員は彼女に気付いていないように見える。

Although she isn't sure now, wondering it might be in a gift section, she goes toward the elevators to find which floor there is a gift section on.

確証はないが、ギフトコーナーにあるかもしれないと思いながら、何階にギフトコーナーがあるか見つけるためにエレベーターに向かう。

There are two elevators, in front of which lots of people are waiting, so she also joins them.

エレベーターは2台あり、その前に多くの人々が待っている。彼女はそこに加わった。

After a while, she sees an elevator arrives but nobody seems to care about it.

しばらくして、1台のエレベーターが来たのが見えたが誰も気にかけない様子だ。

She is the only person who moves forward and gets into it.

彼女だけが前に進みエレベーターに乗り込んだ。

Now in the elevator, only she and an elevator operator, a middle-aged man are inside.

彼女と、中年男性のエレベーター乗務員しかエレベーターの中にいない。

She feels awkward somehow and addresses the man.

何となく気まずさを感じ、彼女は乗務員に話しかけた。

"Is this kind of a private elevator for me? I'm not a VIP nor a frequent customer here..."

「これは私専用のエレベーターなのかしら。私は要人でも常連客でもないんですけど...」

"This is an express for the 9th floor.. May I ask what in particular you are looking for?"

「これは9階直通です。差し支えなければ何をお探しでしょうか」

"I'm looking for a thimble...a golden thimble for my mother..."

「指ぬきです。金の指ぬきを母に」

"Oh, I see. It should be on the 9th.Here we are."

「ああわかりました。それなら9階にあると思います。さあ着きました」

The door opens, but the floor is dimly lit inside and it seems that there is nothing but rows of empty showcases without any clerks or shoppers.

ドアは開いたが、フロアの中は薄暗い照明しかなく、空のショーケースが並んでいるだけで店員も買い物客もいない。

"This must be some kind of mistake..."

「あれ、どうしたのかしら」

But the elevator starts to move down with the doors closed already.

しかし、エレベーターは、すでにドアが閉まり下に向かって動き出した。

"Is anybody here?"

「どなたかいらっしゃいますか」

Silence.

何も音がしない。

"How can I find a thimble here? There is no merchandise here. This must be a mistake!"

「指ぬきなんてあるのか。商品も何もないのに。絶対何かの間違いだ」

"Have someone attended you already?"

「もう誰か店員は来ましたか」

Out of nowhere, a female clerk appears and speaks to her.

どこからともなく、女性の店員が現れて話しかけてきた。

"Where did you come from? I didn't see anybody here!"

「どこから来たのですか。誰も見えなかったのですが」

"You may not have been paying attention, ma'am. I've been here. Which item may I show you?"

「お客様は注意を払っていらっしゃらなかったかもしれません。私はこちらにおりました。どの商品をお取りしましょうか」

"No, you haven't but it's okay. Well, I'm looking for a golden thimble which I saw in your ad...but I'm not sure you have that here. I can't see any items on this floor."

「いいえ。あなたはいなかったわ。いいわ。そうね、広告で見た金の指ぬきを探しているんですけど、でもここにあるのか。そもそもこの階には商品が何も無いし」

"Don't worry. We actually have the appropriate one for you. Follow this way."

「ご心配なく。実はお客様にぴったりのものがございます。こちらにお越しください」

Then, the lady clerk walks and she follows.

そういうと女性店員は歩き出し、客である婦人は後に続いた。

"Here you are."

「こちらです」

As a matter of fact, it's a golden thimble.

たしかに、それは金の指ぬきだった。

"Oh, this is beautiful! It must be expensive. How much is it?"

「まあ美しいこと。これは高価に違いないでしょう。おいくらですか」

"It's made of 24-karat gold. Since it's on a sale, it's 25 dollars."

「こちらは24金です。今はセールなので、25ドルです」

"Not expensive, actually very reasonable. I'll take it."

「それほど高くないわ。とても手頃。これにします」

"You made a wise choice, ma'am. Thank you very much, Marsha. And will you be paying in cash or credit?"

「お買い得だと思います、お客様。誠に有難うございます。マーシャ。お支払いは現金ですか、カードですか」

"I'll pay in cash. You know, I don't want things made complicated with signature or something.... But what did you say? Why did you know my name?"

「現金でお願いします。カードはサインとか手続きが煩わしくて。え、何て言いました。どうして私の名前を」

"We must have met before in this store because you are a special customer..."

「以前にもお会いしたに違いありません。あなたは特別なお客様ですから」

"That's impossible. This is the first time. I've never been here before."

「それは有り得ない。今回が初めてで、来たことないわ、私」

"No. You just misunderstood..."

「いいえ、きっと勘違いされているのですね」

"How did I misunderstand something like this? Okay, never mind. Well, I have to go now."

「どうやったらこんなことを勘違いするのかしら。いいです、もう結構です。もう行かなければ」

"Yes, ma'am, thank you very much. It was my pleasure serving you. By the way, are you happy Ms White?"

「はいお客様、有難うございます。ご利用いただき大変嬉しく思います。ところで、ホワイトさん、お幸せですか」

"What? Why did you ask what was actually none of your business? How did you know my second and first name? What's the hell happening here? Why, you?"

「え、どうしてあなたに関係のない事を聞くの。どうやって私のフルネームがわかったの。なんなんですか、これは。どうして」

"I'm just making conversation... Well, suit yourself. I leave you. Have a nice day!"

「私は会話しようとしているだけです。まあお好きになさってください。私は行きますので。ご機嫌よう」

And just then, the elevator arrives and the doors open.

ちょうどその時、エレベーターが到着しドアが開いた。

Once Marsha inside, she turns back and sees no one  on the floor...

中に乗り込み、振り返るとフロアには誰もいなかった。
