英語日記 冬休みが始まった
My winter vacation this year started last Sunday.
今年の冬休みがこの間の日曜日に始まった。
It goes until January 4th, so I’m having about ten days off.
1月4日まで続くので、約10日間の休みがある。
I feel lucky because this is longer than other years.
今年は例年より長いのでラッキー。
As for my vacation plan, I don’t have anything special except for going to my parents’ house to eat together with my family.
休みの予定としては、家族と両親の家に行って一緒に食事する以外、特別何もない。
Actually, regardless of whether there is a pandemic, I don’t usually have many special plans.
実のところ、パンデミックであろうがなかろうが、大抵特別な予定はないのである。
Nevertheless, it’s really good to have this amount of free time at once.
いずれにせよ、一度にこれだけの量の自由時間があるのはすばらしい。
I want to spend it as productively as possible.
できるだけ生産的に過ごしたい。
Some of the things I’m looking forward to are going out for a walk with my family, cooking something special, reading more books in English(at least trying), and planing what I will do for English practice next year.
楽しみにしてることとしては、家族と散歩に行くこと、何か特別な料理を作ること、英語でもっと本を読むこと、あと、来年英語練習のための何をやるか計画することだ。
I wish to go out to eat, but considering the possible rise of Covid cases due to omicron, I won’t.
外食もしたいけど、オミクロンによるコロナ感染者増加の可能性を考えてやめておく。
As for English practice, I feel like it’d be about time for me to set a more specific goal or clarify my purpose, which I haven’t been very sure about myself.
英語練習については、そろそろもっと具体的な目標を決めたり、自分の目的を明確化する時期じゃないかと思う。実は自分自身これまでよくわからなかった。
Maybe this vacation is a good time for me to think about it too.
たぶんこの休みはそれを考えるにはいい時間かもしれない。
英語日記 現場立ち会い
There is a business custom in trading companies that when sales people have some deals involving equipment installation work or construction work at client sites, they should be present on site while work is underway.
商社で、営業担当者が設備設置工事や建設工事を含む取引に携わる時、工事が行われる間に現場に居合わせなければならないというビジネス習慣がある。
I’m not sure how this activity should be called generally in English, but on the internet, I saw it was translated as "on-site witnessing".
この活動が一般的に英語で何と言われるか知らないけど、ネットでは、「現場立ち会い」という翻訳を見た。
For the last two days, I had something like that and went to a client factory.
この2日間、そういう仕事があって、客先の工場に行った。
It wasn’t exactly any installation or construction work, but through the intermediation of the company I work for, I arranged for an engineer to come and teach an engineer from the client company how to operate this device.
今回は正確には設備設置でも建設工事でもなく、うちの会社を通じて、客先の技術者にある機器の使い方を教えるために技術者に来てもらう手配をした。
Basically, I was just there looking at what they were doing together all day long.
基本的には、自分は一日中彼らが一緒にやっていることを見ていただけだ。
My original plan was that I would leave before work was done because I would have nothing in particular to do but look.
当初の計画では、見る以外特にやることもないので、作業が終わる前に現場を立ち去るつもりでいた。
It didn’t go as planned.
しかし計画通りには行かなかった。
The devices that the engineers were supposed to use for trial cut didn’t secure the accuracy.
技術者たちが使うことになっていた機器の精度が出ていなかったのだ。
Consequently, out of the concern that we would have to halt the entire work plan in the middle, I had to be present there all along.
結局、途中で全体の作業計画が中止になる心配から、ずっとその場にいる羽目になった。
It didn’t change the fact that I was just there, but this time around I might have made a small contribution.
自分はただそこにいただけということには変わりないけど、今回はちょっとだけ作業に貢献した。
I created a makeshift cleaning tool for the device by using a chopstick and scrap fabric, and it worked and saved the day.
割りばしと布切れで自分が作ったなんちゃっての清掃道具がうまく機能して、何とか作業を続けられることができたのだった。
It was boring days, but I'm happy that I was able to contribute to solving the problem.
2日間手持ち無沙汰だったけど、問題解決に貢献できたのはうれしい。
英語日記 今日はTOEICだった
Today, I had a TOEIC test.
今日はTOEICを受験した。
This time, I’m sure I messed up.
今回はやってしまった感がすごい。
In the listening section, the knack to accelerate solving the problems is to read the given questions and choices to choose the right answers from before the audio conversation sample is played.
リスニング部門では、回答を速くするコツは、オーディオの会話サンプルが流れる前に、所定の質問と正しい答えを選ぶ選択肢を読むことだ。
I had forgotten about this test format, and in some problems, I read the wrong questions and choices, and was at a loss.
このテスト形式を忘れていて、いくつかの問題では、間違えた質問と選択肢を読んでしまい、茫然自失。
In the reading section, due to time running out, there were ten questions that I randomly marked the choices for without thinking.
リーディング部門では、時間不足のせいで、考えずにデタラメに選択肢をマークした質問が10個あった。
I’ve been taking TOEIC tests, four times for the last nine years.
この9年間で4回TOEICを受けてきた。
My scores have steadily been increasing until now.
自分のスコアが今日まで安定して上がってきてた。
However, this time around, I’m sure they will drop.
でも今回は、まず間違いなくスコアが落ちるだろう。
キサーゴータミー説話アレンジ、和訳
Buddha stopped off at a village and met a desperate woman who had lost a son to a disease some time before.
仏陀はある村に立ち寄り、一人の途方に暮れた女性と出会った。彼女はしばらく前に病で息子を失っていた。
She loved and couldn't forget the little six-year-old boy, so she had desperately been looking for a means to cure him from death.
彼女はまだ六歳だった小さい息子を愛していて忘れることができなかったので、切実な思いで彼を死から癒やす手段を探し求めていた。
She approached Buddha as he ended his sermon among a crowd of villagers, and asked him how she could bring her son back from death.
村の群衆の間で説法を終えた時、彼女は仏陀に近づき、どうすれば彼女の息子を死から取り戻すことができるのか尋ねた。
With an enigmatic smile, Buddha gave her an instruction:
仏陀は不思議な笑みを浮かべて、次のような指示を出した。
"Go obtain a handful of a certain plant seed, but from someone who has never lost any of his or her family members or relatives by death."
「ある植物の種子を一握り手に入れなさい。ただし、これまで家族や親戚と死別したことのない人からもらって来ることが条件です」
Believing in his words, full of hope, she set off visiting people to get the seed.
仏陀の言葉を信じて、希望一杯で、彼女は種子を手に入れるべく人々を訪ね歩いた。
After going around her own village, she moved to neighboring villages one after another, asking all the people about the seed.
自分の村を回った後、近隣の村々にも向かい、すべての人々に種子について聞いて回った。
She found some who had it but no one who didn't have an experience of death of their family or relatives.
彼女は種子を持っている人を見つけることはできたが、家族や親戚の死を経験したことのない人は見つけることができなかった。
In her process of exploration, she got to know many people with deep sorrow of the separation from their loved husbands, wives, sons, daughters, or parents.
種子を探し歩く中で、多くの人々が、大切な夫、妻、息子、娘、両親との別れの悲しみを抱えていることを知るに至った。
Being exhausted of the search, she came to the conclusion that her task would be unachievable, yet she learned about something that she didn't know before, and realized that she didn't feel agony any longer.
探索に疲れ果てて、彼女は自分の任務が達成不可能であるという結論に辿り着いた。しかし、彼女は前には知らなかった何かについて学び、そして自分がすでに苦悶を感じていないことに気がついた。
With refreshed feeling and tranquility, she recovered a gentle smile back on her face, and began to walk toward her village with not energetic yet steady strides.
爽やかな気持ちと静けさを湛え、彼女は優しい笑顔を取り戻した。そして、力強くはないが確かな足取りで自分の村に向かって歩き始めた。

A young, good looking lady walks into a department store crowded with shoppers one day at the end of the year.
年の暮れのある日、若く容姿端麗な婦人がひとり、買い物客で混み合ったデパートに歩いて来る。
She looks to be in her mid-20s.
20代半ば位だろうか。
The simple combination of her white shirt and tight black skirt, both pleated neatly, which is a typical office lady look, contrasts her fine features.
共にきっちりと折り目のついた白いシャツとぴっちりした黒いスカートの組み合わせは典型的な事務職の女性の服装だが、彼女の繊細な顔立ちを際立たせている。
She's looking around on the ground floor.
彼女は1階のフロアを見て回っている。
She has come to buy a golden thimble that she found in an ad of the store previously, and thinks that should be an ideal gift for her mother.
前に店の広告で見た金の指ぬきが母親に理想的な贈り物だと思い買いに来たのだった。
After going around on the floor, she asks a clerk, who appears terribly busy attending to other customers, which floor she should go to for it, but he looks as if he doesn't hear her.
1階のフロアをまわった後、客たちの相手に恐ろしく忙しそうな店員に、指ぬきを買うにはどのフロアに行かなければならないか聞いた。しかし、店員は彼女に気付いていないように見える。
Although she isn't sure now, wondering it might be in a gift section, she goes toward the elevators to find which floor there is a gift section on.
確証はないが、ギフトコーナーにあるかもしれないと思いながら、何階にギフトコーナーがあるか見つけるためにエレベーターに向かう。
There are two elevators, in front of which lots of people are waiting, so she also joins them.
エレベーターは2台あり、その前に多くの人々が待っている。彼女はそこに加わった。
After a while, she sees an elevator arrives but nobody seems to care about it.
しばらくして、1台のエレベーターが来たのが見えたが誰も気にかけない様子だ。
She is the only person who moves forward and gets into it.
彼女だけが前に進みエレベーターに乗り込んだ。
Now in the elevator, only she and an elevator operator, a middle-aged man are inside.
彼女と、中年男性のエレベーター乗務員しかエレベーターの中にいない。
She feels awkward somehow and addresses the man.
何となく気まずさを感じ、彼女は乗務員に話しかけた。
"Is this kind of a private elevator for me? I'm not a VIP nor a frequent customer here..."
「これは私専用のエレベーターなのかしら。私は要人でも常連客でもないんですけど...」
"This is an express for the 9th floor.. May I ask what in particular you are looking for?"
「これは9階直通です。差し支えなければ何をお探しでしょうか」
"I'm looking for a thimble...a golden thimble for my mother..."
「指ぬきです。金の指ぬきを母に」
"Oh, I see. It should be on the 9th.Here we are."
「ああわかりました。それなら9階にあると思います。さあ着きました」
The door opens, but the floor is dimly lit inside and it seems that there is nothing but rows of empty showcases without any clerks or shoppers.
ドアは開いたが、フロアの中は薄暗い照明しかなく、空のショーケースが並んでいるだけで店員も買い物客もいない。
"This must be some kind of mistake..."
「あれ、どうしたのかしら」
But the elevator starts to move down with the doors closed already.
しかし、エレベーターは、すでにドアが閉まり下に向かって動き出した。
"Is anybody here?"
「どなたかいらっしゃいますか」
Silence.
何も音がしない。
"How can I find a thimble here? There is no merchandise here. This must be a mistake!"
「指ぬきなんてあるのか。商品も何もないのに。絶対何かの間違いだ」
"Have someone attended you already?"
「もう誰か店員は来ましたか」
Out of nowhere, a female clerk appears and speaks to her.
どこからともなく、女性の店員が現れて話しかけてきた。
"Where did you come from? I didn't see anybody here!"
「どこから来たのですか。誰も見えなかったのですが」
"You may not have been paying attention, ma'am. I've been here. Which item may I show you?"
「お客様は注意を払っていらっしゃらなかったかもしれません。私はこちらにおりました。どの商品をお取りしましょうか」
"No, you haven't but it's okay. Well, I'm looking for a golden thimble which I saw in your ad...but I'm not sure you have that here. I can't see any items on this floor."
「いいえ。あなたはいなかったわ。いいわ。そうね、広告で見た金の指ぬきを探しているんですけど、でもここにあるのか。そもそもこの階には商品が何も無いし」
"Don't worry. We actually have the appropriate one for you. Follow this way."
「ご心配なく。実はお客様にぴったりのものがございます。こちらにお越しください」
Then, the lady clerk walks and she follows.
そういうと女性店員は歩き出し、客である婦人は後に続いた。
"Here you are."
「こちらです」
As a matter of fact, it's a golden thimble.
たしかに、それは金の指ぬきだった。
"Oh, this is beautiful! It must be expensive. How much is it?"
「まあ美しいこと。これは高価に違いないでしょう。おいくらですか」
"It's made of 24-karat gold. Since it's on a sale, it's 25 dollars."
「こちらは24金です。今はセールなので、25ドルです」
"Not expensive, actually very reasonable. I'll take it."
「それほど高くないわ。とても手頃。これにします」
"You made a wise choice, ma'am. Thank you very much, Marsha. And will you be paying in cash or credit?"
「お買い得だと思います、お客様。誠に有難うございます。マーシャ。お支払いは現金ですか、カードですか」
"I'll pay in cash. You know, I don't want things made complicated with signature or something.... But what did you say? Why did you know my name?"
「現金でお願いします。カードはサインとか手続きが煩わしくて。え、何て言いました。どうして私の名前を」
"We must have met before in this store because you are a special customer..."
「以前にもお会いしたに違いありません。あなたは特別なお客様ですから」
"That's impossible. This is the first time. I've never been here before."
「それは有り得ない。今回が初めてで、来たことないわ、私」
"No. You just misunderstood..."
「いいえ、きっと勘違いされているのですね」
"How did I misunderstand something like this? Okay, never mind. Well, I have to go now."

"Yes, ma'am, thank you very much. It was my pleasure serving you. By the way, are you happy Ms White?"
「はいお客様、有難うございます。ご利用いただき大変嬉しく思います。ところで、ホワイトさん、お幸せですか」
"What? Why did you ask what was actually none of your business? How did you know my second and first name? What's the hell happening here? Why, you?"
「え、どうしてあなたに関係のない事を聞くの。どうやって私のフルネームがわかったの。なんなんですか、これは。どうして」
"I'm just making conversation... Well, suit yourself. I leave you. Have a nice day!"
「私は会話しようとしているだけです。まあお好きになさってください。私は行きますので。ご機嫌よう」
And just then, the elevator arrives and the doors open.
ちょうどその時、エレベーターが到着しドアが開いた。
Once Marsha inside, she turns back and sees no one on the floor...
中に乗り込み、振り返るとフロアには誰もいなかった。
英語日記 映画の予告版で英語練習
These days, I sometimes practice overlapping (imitating voices of people speaking English) using movie trailer videos on YouTube.
この頃、YouTubeにある映画の予告版のビデオを使ってオーバーラッピング(英語を話している人の声を真似すること)を時々練習する。
It’s just a casual practice that I do on a whim when I feel like, but it might be pretty effective if I can get to nail it in terms of resemblance to the actors in how I sound.
これは気が向いた時に思いつきでやる気楽な練習にすぎないけど、自分がどう聞こえるか俳優たちうまく真似できるようになったら結構効果的かもしれない。
I know it’s absolutely my self complacency even if I ever feel satisfied with my outcome, though.
自分の成果に満足したとしても自己満足に過ぎないことは分かっているけど。
At the same time, by doing this for many different trailers, I can look for the movies I should look forward to watching in full version, which is an additional benefit to improve my life quality in way of practicing English.
同時に、たくさんの予告版でこの練習をすることで、完全版を見たくなる英語を探すことができる。これは英語練習を通して自分の人生の質を良くするようなついでのプラスである。
