英語日記 長男に英語を教える

I started teaching my eldest son English some time ago.

しばらく前に、長男に英語を教え始めた。

What we mostly do are practicing English pronunciation and reading out loud by using a textbook specially designed for practicing reading English out loud.

僕らが主にやってるのは英語発音練習と特別に英語音読練習用に書かれた参考書を使っての音読だ。

The book has a series of short English texts, consisting of several chapters.

この本には一連の短い英語の文章が掲載されていていくつかの章から成る。

We repeat reading one chapter over and over again, alongside I explain the pronunciations of unfamiliar words, the meanings of sentences and some grammatical points, and we continue that over several days, like one week or two, until he can read the text out loud smoothly.

僕らは一つの章を繰り返し読んで、それと共に僕がわからない単語の発音や文の意味や文法事項とかを説明して、長男が文章をスムーズに読めるようになるまで、1、2週間とか数日間にわたって繰り返している。

At the beginning, we tried to follow the method instructed by the book with an accompanying CD, but since the audio is too fast for him, now I read the texts out loud, sentence by sentence when necessary, so he can repeat me.

最初のうちは、付属のCDを使ってその本で示されている方法でやろうとしたけど、音声が長男には速すぎて、今は僕が文章を音読して、必要な時は一文一文読んで、長男がそれを繰り返すようにしている。

The good point of this method is that he can take as much time as he needs so as to master a sentence — I won’t stop repeating it until he can read it smoothly enough.

このやり方のいいところは、長男が一文をマスターするのに必要なだけの時間をかけることができる点だ。彼が十分スムーズに読めるまで僕は繰り返すのをやめないから。

And this might be good for me too because I have to pay closer attention to pronunciations as I’m responsible for that.

あと、このやり方は、自分が教える責任があるから発音により注意を払うことになるので自分にとってもよいかもしれない。

As for the outcome so far, obviously he became able to more smoothly read out loud as we came.

今のところ成果としては、これまでやってきて長男は明らかによりスムーズに音読できるようになった。

If he actually improves, it’ll be rewarding for me too.

もし彼が上達すれば、自分にとっても報われる思いだ。
