ところがある時の事でございます。何気なくカンダタが頭を挙げて、血の池の空を眺めますと、そのひっそりとした暗の中を、遠い遠い天上から、銀色の蜘蛛の糸が、まるで人目にかかるのを恐れるように、一すじ細く光りながら、するすると自分の上へ垂れて参るのではございませんか。
One day, however, Kandata casually looked up in the sky, which was actually the pond of blood, and in the quiet dark, he saw a ray of a spider’s silver thread coming down smoothly over him as if it feared to be seen.

カンダタはこれを見ると、思わず手を拍って喜びました。
When he saw it, he was excited and clapped hands unconsciously.

この糸に縋りついて、どこまでものぼって行けば、きっと地獄からぬけ出せるのに相違ございません。
If he followed and climbed this thread until it ended, he would surely escape from hell.

いや、うまく行くと、極楽へはいる事さえも出来ましょう。
Furthermore, he could even step into heaven.

そうすれば、もう針の山へ追い上げられる事もなくなれば、血の池に沈められる事もある筈はございません。
If that happened, he wouldn’t get cornered in the mountain of needles nor would get sunk in the pond of blood.

　こう思いましたからカンダタは、早速その蜘蛛の糸を両手でしっかりとつかみながら、一生懸命に上へ上へとたぐりのぼり始めました。
With that in mind, he immediately grabbed the spider’s thread with both hands and began climbing higher and higher by hanging on to it.

元より大泥坊の事でございますから、こう云う事には昔から、慣れ切っているのでございます。
He was originally a master thief and was very used to this kind of activity.
