This is the continuation of a novel I have been translating into English.

こちらは地獄の底の血の池で、ほかの罪人と一しょに、浮いたり沈んだりしていたカンダタでございます。
Here came Kandata floating and sinking in a pond of blood at the bottom of hell.

何しろどちらを見ても、まっ暗で、たまにその暗からぼんやり浮き上っているものがあると思いますと、それは恐しい針の山の針が光るのでございますから、その心細さと云ったらございません。
It was pitch black all around after all. What occasionally loomed was the glitter of the frightening mountain of needles. The forlornness of the place was beyond words.

その上あたりは墓の中のようにしんと静まり返って、たまに聞えるものと云っては、ただ罪人がつく微かな嘆息ばかりでございます。
On top of that, it was all quiet around here like a cemetery. The only thing you could occasionally hear was just faint sigh sinners gave.

これはここへ落ちて来るほどの人間は、もうさまざまな地獄の責苦に疲れはてて、泣声を出す力さえなくなっているのでございましょう。
Those who ended up falling into this place were already so exhausted from different types of torment of hell that they wouldn’t have enough energy to cry.

ですからさすが大泥坊のカンダタも、やはり血の池の血に咽せびながら、まるで死にかかった蛙のように、ただもがいてばかり居りました。
That was why even the master thief Kandata was no exception. He was choked with blood of the pond and was just struggling like a dying frog.
