英語日記 英語の発音練習

At the turning of the year, I set a bunch of the goals that I want to achieve this year like new year resolutions. However, I already struggle to conjure up the motivation to work on them. I have a slight headache, some pain behind my eyes. This is probably due to my looking at the smartphone all the time and is probably causing my lack of motivation.

Today, I was supposed to go to work according to my company’s calendar although it’s the coming of age holiday, but I took a day off. This morning, I’ve been watching a sitcom called The Office which was aired several years ago (or decades ago?). I feel like I can keep watching it all the way. However, I want to do other things too. I don’t want to spend my holiday just to watch Netflix, which seems unproductive to me even if I watch it all in English.

Another thing that I want to engage in this year is English pronunciation practice. To begin with, I started reading out loud more than last year. In the past, I used to read any English writing out loud whether it’s a book, web news articles or sample sentences, believing this habit would help me familiarize myself with English sounds. For the las couple of years, I rather used to do something called overlapping which is repeat what you listen to from some audio materials such as podcasts or tv shows. However, I feel like I don’t pay much attention to my own voice when I do overlapping. Maybe, if I want to modify and improve my pronunciation, I should focus on my own pronunciations and for that purpose, reading out loud would be more suitable and effective, I guess.

英語日記 冬休み最終日

Today is the last day of my winter break. Tomorrow I’m going back to work. I don’t have specific plans what I’m going to do today. Most likely, I’ll go out to walk for a bit at some point during the day. I’ll try to read in English or watch Netflix. The other day, I found an old sitcom The Office on Netflix. I started watching it and finished four episodes. I actually had finished watching it up to the 8th season of the show in the past, maybe about seven years ago, but back then I didn’t understand as well as now due to my lack of English proficiency. This time around, because Netflix has English subtitles in addition to my improved English skills, I think I could understand better.

As for reading, I’ll try reading op-ed articles on news websites, but I haven’t figured out yet where I can read articles for free. Nowadays many news websites require subscription, which is totally an understandable move. If I can find good websites where I can read quality articles for free, I would be lucky.

英語日記 GoToキャンペーン

I know some people claim that GoTo travel campaign is a very effective economic stimulus program and many people have been traveling around while making use of the discount given for the campaign. Some people seriously seem to think that they are helping the tourist industry with this campaign. But what’s happened is that once the pause of the campaign was announced, there was a staggering number of cancellations for tours, transportations and hotels. Why didn’t they stick to their willingness to help the industry? Honestly it seems too stingy to me that they didn’t want to pay for the proper price. I think there is something wrong in this scheme of things. If they could afford to travel even with the benefit of the campaign, I wonder why they didn’t give away some money to those involved in the tourism. In that way, pretending they would have traveled, they could help the industry.

The government has often been telling that they are determined to do anything to prevent the spread of the virus, but all they did seems to be this GoTo campaign emphasizing the importance of economy.

英語日記 久々に家族とラーメン屋へ

Tonight my family and I went to a ramen shop for the first time in a long time. I think it’s risky to go out to eat during the pandemic, so I usually don’t do so but suddenly I felt nostalgic for going out together with my family. Also, I remembered that the ramen shop that I was thinking about was quite spacious and somewhat compartmentalized between tables. This was why I thought it wouldn’t be necessary to worry too much.

When we got there, it was as spacious as I had thought, but there were more customers than I had expected. We were all wearing masks all along except actually eating ramen we got. I felt like I was the most uptight one at the restaurant while warning my family not to touch the outside of their masks and to sanitize their hands or the table before eating. My sons seemed to genuinely enjoy eating. Maybe I was spoiling their joy of having ramen by nagging about, but I couldn’t help it.

Maybe, I won’t go out to eat for some time again. Hopefully, the pandemic situation will get better soon.

英語日記 父、退職

Today I heard from my wife that my father had suddenly resigned from his taxi driving job several days ago. My mother told my wife so when she dropped at my house. The news took me by surprise although I had been encouraging him to do so because of his age, 78. I had started saying he might as well already retire a couple of years ago, but he didn’t take it seriously.

According to my wife, the reason why he decided was a minor accident he had on duty. When he went to pick up a customer at a kindergarten and tried to park the car, the car hit a hedge. It was just a fender bender, so luckily there was no one injured. However, it would seem to be a sign for him. He seemed disappointed with himself after the accident. He said to my mother something like “making such an accident would be too unprofessional”. Next day, he turned in his resignation.

I think it was the right decision. I’m relieved that he hadn’t had any severe accidents in driving. As for their income, I don’t worry too much since they seem to have some savings and receive national pensions. What makes me worry is that he might get too bored without a job after having worked long hours regularly over almost 40 years: he had started working as a taxi driver when he was 40 and the only thing he seemed motivated by was his job. I think he was desperate to support his family. He still looks young for his age. He has rather become a cheerful person as he aged. I wonder if not having a job might have some influence on his morale, making him too slack or something. I hope he can find his another passion in life.
